What the law generally says
In New Jersey, a landlord generally has to return your security deposit, plus any interest or earnings, minus lawful deductions, within 30 days after the tenancy ends. Deductions are supposed to be itemized and sent to you. That does not mean every late or poorly documented deduction automatically means you win. It means you may have a claim, and what a court does depends on the facts. The rule is N.J.S.A. 46:8-21.1.
